As an implementing partner of the EU funded Lebanon Innovate program, led by Berytech, ELCIM at the Industrial Research Institute (IRI) is working with the Lebanese International University (LIU) to strengthen its Technology Transfer Office, building clearer pathways between research and the market.
For LIU, this partnership is about structure. Lebanon Innovate is helping the university develop clearer internal processes, improve coordination among researchers, and put in place real commercialization pathways, so that promising ideas have somewhere to go beyond the lab.
One of the clearest results of this work is Odyssey, a project developed with direct support from the university. According to the team behind it, this backing gave them something they didn’t have before: a serious, structured way to take their idea forward. As they put it, having that structure behind them means moving toward real world impact, not just staying at the idea stage.
For the programme’s local partners, cases like Odyssey point to something bigger than one project. They show what innovation in Lebanon, and across the MENA region, is capable of when researchers have the right institutional support behind them, even in a country facing ongoing instability.
That is the core of what Lebanon Innovate offers: funded by the European Union and implemented locally, it gives universities like LIU the framework to take research seriously as a source of commercial and societal value, not just academic output.
Through this work, LIU is showing how knowledge can move from the classroom to the market, and from the market into people’s lives.
